Flora

Flora of Bashkortostan is variable and it is explained by that fact that the territory RB is located at the interfaces between steppe and forest zones. On plain areas the zonality is pronounced (steppe, forest-steppe and forest zones). The latitudinal zonality of Republican flora is complicated by the phenomena of vertical belts, caused by the presence of the mountainous system on its territory – the Ural Mountains. Besides, the position of Bashkortostan at the interfaces between Europe and Asia combined such sheer European types of forests as lime-oak forests and Siberian variants, like larch forests with motley grass.

Forests RB are mainly presented by broadleaf trees with predominance of oak, lime-tree, aspen and elm. In herbage Aegopodium is the main grass with addition of spring peavine, woodruff, European hazelwort and Stellaria in the northern regions and city peavine, cherry-tree, woodbreed, almond-tree and others in southern regions. Nut-tree, wahoo and rowan-tree are the most ordinary plants for underbush in larch forests.

Coniferous forests are met in the northern part of Bashkortostan, mainly elms and silver firs. The main bodies of these forests are connected with mountainous areas. In lower parts of mountains pine-trees prevail and elms are mainly met in the upper parts with red bilberries, blackberries and other taiga plants spreading beneath. In the central districts of Bashkir (Southern) Ural (the ridge of Crack and ZILAIRSKOE plateau) and in the eastern foothills (KRYKTYTAU, IRENDYK) larch forests are still preserved. The essential part of these forests is destroyed with felling and is changed with low forests. Flood-land forests are formed by poplars, willows and lime-trees.

Before intensive exploration steppes occupied no less than one third of the plain part of Bashkir territory. After exploration the steppe share harshly reduced and in pre-Ural zone steppes have nearly disappeared. The main bodies of steppe preserved on slopes of mountains and hills in trans-Ural in sub-mountainous districts of pre-Ural, on BUGULMINSKAYA-BELEBEEVSKAYA upland and on northern spurs of OBSHY SYRT. In all three zone variants of steppes the plants-stone-lovers sprout on low-powered skeleton soils of mountains – thyme, pinks etc. In the plain part of Bashkortostan (mainly in the southern part of trans-Ural) solonetzic steppes can be met.

Meadows in Bashkortostan have more often secondary character and they appear on the sites of tree-felling, after haymaking or on pastures.

Swamps hold an unessential part of lands in Bashkortostan. In uphill areas (on peaks of IREMEL and YAMANTAU) specific mountainous tundra zones are located, where one can meet great bilberry, crowberry, dryad and other plants, very usual for this zone. Wormwood, hemp, thistle, nettle, burdock, melliot, bur-manigold and other similar plants cover rather large territory of Bashkortostan. These plants play an important role in forming ecologically favorable mode in city and rural settlements, preventing soil erosion and absorbing toxic substances.
