Bashkortostan is a theatre republic. The first Bashkir state theatre was created in 1919 in Sterlitamak. Now the Bashkir state academic theatre of drama by the name of M. Gafuri, State theatre of opera and ballet RB, Republican academic Russian drama theatre, National youth theatre RB, Ufa State Tatar theatre «Nur», Bashkir state puppet theatre, Sibay drama theatre by the name of А. Mubaryakov and childrens theatre «Sulpan», Sterlitamak Russian and Bashkir drama theatre, Salavat Bashkir drama theatre, Tuymazy Tatar drama theatre widely opened their doors in front of thankful and inexperienced spectators.

The Ufa state institute of arts, beginning the new stage in development of theatrical education in Bashkortostan, was opened in 1968.

Till this moment, in 1926 a theatrical department was opened in Ufa college of arts which functioned till 1971 and prepared the whole Pleiad of talented figures of dramatic art RB, among the first graduating students were: Zaytuna Bikbulatova, Arslan Mubaryakov, Valiakhmet Galimov, Rim Syrtlanov, Khusain Kudashev, Ragida Yanbulatova and many others.

The admission to Bashkir national studio is carried out this year in theatrical college by the name of М. М. Schepkin at the Small theatre of Russian Federation. Modern theatrical life of Bashkortostan Republic is rich and various: there are more than fifty premiere performances on the plays of national, Russian and foreign authors annually, tours of theatrical collectives over the republic, the regions of Russia and abroad, seminars of young dramatists, festivals and competitions of republican and international levels.

In the republic 12 theatres work successfully, including ones in the capital  the Bashkir state academic theatre of drama by the name of М. Gafuri, Bashkir state theatre of opera and ballet, State academic Russian drama theatre, Ufa state Tatar theatre «Nur», National youth theatre by the name of М. Karim and Bashkir state puppet theatre. In other cities of the republic, six drama theatres function actively. In 2007 in the capital of the republic two large events will take place in the sphere of dramatic art. In June the XII international festival of ballet art of the name of Rudolf Nuriev will be held, and the IV International festival of Turk-language theatres «Tuganlyk» («Cognation») will take place in September, devoted to 450-anniversary of Bashkiria free-will joining Russia.

In Bashkortostan with every year the material and technical base of theatrical establishments is improved: new buildings were built for the Ufa state Tatar theatre «Nur» and Sibay Bashkir state drama theatre by the name A. Mubaryakov; the complete reconstruction of buildings of the Bashkir academic theatre of drama and National Youth theatre is carried out. The reconstruction of the State academic Russian drama theatre continues. On building and reconstruction of theatres for the last seven years from the budget of our republic, 1 billion rubles were allocated. Annually from the budget of the republic, necessary funds are given on the new staging and acquisition of dramaturgic works. For example, this year on the issue of new theatricals 25 million rubles were allocated, on acquisition of plays for theatres about 2,2 million rubles.

In Bashkortostan more than 4 million people lives. Thus only for one passed 2005 year our theatrically-concert halls were visited by one and a half million audience, that testifies both about high demand on professional art in our republic, and about its high artistic level.

- Notably, that in the Russian theatres it is possible to see not only Russian and foreign dramaturgy but also Bashkir one. And in Bashkir and Tatar theatres, except for national, theatricals go on works of Russian and foreign authors. All this is instrumental in creation of atmosphere of friendship and international consent,  the President of the republic underlined.
