Good ground for development of Bashkir literature was created centuries-old verbal folk creation. In the folk memory were the names of the most ancient narrators-sesens, there were legends about their contests, and their creation reached us in epos and legends. From ancient times, Bashkirs had experience of verbal reproduction, and later  the writing record of history of births and tribes. These are historical legends, books of events and shezhere  genealogies. They are various on types.

There are shezhere, being just description of genealogical tree of family only, basic events and personalities in its history, but in some of them such descriptions are combined with legends and stories, with detailed coverage of events. The last   type is most valuable for history of literature and can be examined as a historical and literary piece. Such shezhere are of great interest from the point of language and style. The best   ones of such shezhere are the unique nationally original phenomena of literature.

For a reader, outside of our republic, the Bashkir literature is associated foremost with creations of Mustay Karim. It is a prominent poet and dramatist, passionate publicist, author of lyric stories, whose works are translated not only into Russian but also into languages of near and distant abroad.

The participant of the Great Patriotic War, he with piercing frankness and pain reflected all its tragedy and gave due the heroism and courage of soldiers in the verses, in poems the «December song», «Ulmasbay», «Black waters». His dramas «Aygul Country», «Peshy Makhmut», tragedies "In the night of lunar eclipse", «Dont throw away fire, Prometheus!», «Salavat», a comedy «Abduction of a girl» brought him a wide glory.

Staged by the theaters of many countries, they still remain in their repertoire. A feature film was made on his very popular story «Long-long childhood». Mustay Karim is very sincere, chaste and lofty delicate in his love lyric poetry which sounds as an enthusiastic hymn to a woman. He is also very talented in civil poetry. Let us remember his famous poem «I am not Russian, but the Russian…». Written many decades ago, it is especially modern now and will be important always.

He had very talented predecessors  Miftakhetdin Akmulla, Mazhit Gafuri and Shaykhzada Babich. The gifted contemporaries created alongside to him, who pleased and delighted him with their works -   Khadiya Davletshina, Zaynab Biisheva, authors of historical novels-epics, then Sayfi Kudash, Rashit Nigmati. He noticed the talent of many poets and prose writers in their young years and gave his blessing in large literature, to such poets as Rami of Garipov, Gazim Shafikov, Ravily Bikbaev, Fakiya Tuguzbaev and many others.

Florid Bulyakov, the young journalist, took a kind of relay race from dramatist Mustay Karim, making first attempts at writing in a dramatic genre. Now Florid Minemullovich Bulyakov is a laureate of the State premium of the Russian Federation, author of more than two tens of plays, which with success go on the stage of almost 200 theaters of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Byelorussia, Turkmenia and other CIS countries, and also in the theaters of Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Khabarovsk. He also wrote the first Bashkir television series, two cinema novels, several scenarios of full-length films, libretto for Bashkir rock-opera «Star of love» (composer Salavat Nizametdinov).

His tragicomedy   «Babinur, ah, Babinur!», the folk comedy «Grandmas got married», dramas-parables «Register of love», «Forgotten prayer», tragifarce "Naughty girl", drama-requiem «Shaymuratov-general» are especially popular. There are many talented prose writers, poets in our republic now, thus not only in Ufa; quite a lot of them works in provinces, in such cities, as Sterlitamak, Neftekamsk, Uchaly, etc.
