The sharp decline in financing of all cultural centers happened during 90es, including museums, that led in many regions to their closing. But in Bashkortostan in these years about 30 displays and museums were created and renewed  the museum of Salavat Yulaev in Maloyaz, the museum of S.T.Aksakov in Ufa and in the Nadezhdino village of Belebey region, the museum of Akhmet-Zaki Validi in the Kuzyan village of Ishimbay region, the museum twice Hero of the Soviet Union Musa Gareev in the Verkhneyarkeevo village of Ilishevskiy region, the museum of Shaykhzady Babich in the Asyan village of Dyurtyuly region, etc. The national museum moved to a new place  a building of former land-bank.

Today the National museum of our republic is the largest museum association of Russia. It consists of the main museum in Ufa and 47 branches in cities and districts of Bashkortostan. In 2001 as a result of reorganization of this eldest museum establishment the National literary museum of the republic was created, where literary museums «detached» themselves. On development of museum network Bashkortostan occupies the leading position in Russian Federation (more than 500 museums work in our republic  state, department, municipal and school ones).

The displays of Temyasovskiy museum of local lore and history which was reorganized into the museum of the First Bashkir government Baymak museum of local lore and history were considerably renewed and others. Memorial museums were renewed: the displays of the museum of the known Bashkir kuray player and teacher Gaty Suleymanov and the museum of twice Hero of the Soviet Union Musa Gareev.

After a large-scale reconstruction, the National museum of the republic opened last year in June. A new exposition is placed in 33 display halls and 7 show-rooms. Their area is more than four thousand square meters. The richest collections of the museum  archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, natural-science, documentary and others were supplemented by magnificent modern decoration, including dioramas and artistic canvases, strengthening emotional perception of visitors.

Library service in Bashkortostan is carried out by wide network of libraries of different types of ownership and department belonging. Mainly they are popular public libraries of the system of Ministry of culture and national policy RB  -  the National library by the name of Akhmet-Zaki Validi, the Republican special library for blind people, municipal libraries;  87 percent from them are rural.

Bashkortostan occupies one of the leading places in Russia on the amount of state and municipal popular libraries  about two thousand, resources  - more than 30 million copies of documents, including on the modern media, amount of visitors  about two million people, saving of cultural, spiritual, enlightening traditions.

The main library of the republic is the National library by the name of Akhmet-Zaki Validi  one of especially valuable objects of national-cultural property of the republic, methodical, research, informative center for all libraries. It was founded on June 9, 1921 as the Ufa province scientific library, today NB is the largest national book depository with a fund of more than three million documents.

The electronic catalogue of the library counts more than one hundred thousand records; daily about 900 habitants of Ufa and the republic use its services. The library conducts books exchange with 18 countries of near and distant abroad, jointly with Embassies of the USA, France, Germany; German, French reading-rooms, American part, center of the open access to the Internet are opened in it.

The most perspective direction of modernization of popular libraries is related to use of new information technologies, development of which is defined by the government program «Creation of computer network of public libraries of Bashkortostan Republic for 2002-2010».
